Share rooms or make them public

The share icon in the upper-right corner of each room also provides a link, QR code, and various social networks. However, the link points to https://matrix.to/, from where you can of course access the room through the UCMeetChat web application. But since matrix.to is blocked by Roskomnadzor, use the method described in this article to share a room on the ucmeet.chat or ucmeet.org server.

Each room has a so-called room address, which can be found in the room settings under the “Advanced” submenu. The room address looks like this:

!YSeFNLCZeKfSPUAmAP:matrix.ucmeet.chat

Since this cryptic address cannot be easily read by humans, custom room addresses can be assigned. This is only necessary for rooms that you want to make public and reference elsewhere.

Room addresses can be either globally published addresses, which can be found by users on other servers and are useful for topics beyond UCMeetChat, or local addresses that are valid only within the matrix.ucmeet.chat home server.

To publish a global address, you first need to create a local address.

A local address must be created in both cases!

For the more common case of creating a desired local address, click “Show more” in the “Local addresses” section of the room settings under the “General” tab:

Room settings with the show more selected

After that, in the “Room alias” field, you can assign a recognizable name for this room link. Spaces are not allowed!

You can also assign different addresses. If the room address should be published in the room directory of the Matrix home server matrix.ucmmet.chat, this can be done as follows.

The room address will then have the following structure

#room-address-name:matrix.ucmeet.chat

Suggestion No. 1 for sharing the room address:

If you want to share the room in Matrix, you can use the internal link function by entering the first characters of the local address

#room_address:matrix.ucmeet.chat

into the chat input field. If you are a member of this room, you can confirm the autocomplete suggestion with a mouse click. This is a special link for use within Matrix, which will open directly in the recipient’s client when clicked.

Suggestion No. 2 for sharing the room address:

The share icon in the upper-right corner of each room also provides a matrix.to link, as well as a QR code and various social networks. The matrix.to link leads to a page where you can choose how to open the link. For example, you can use the installed UCMeetChat Desktop client or choose which home server should be used to enter the room.

https://matrix.to/#/#Room-address-name:matrix.ucmeet.chat?via=matrix.ucmeet.chat

Suggestion No. 3 for sharing the room address:

In addition, you can also create a hyperlink to the room, which should be structured as follows:

https://matrix.ucmeet.chat/#/room/#roomaddress:matrix.ucmeet.chat

This creates a web address (URL) that can be easily shared publicly or with a target group. However, this link only opens UCMeetChat Web in the participants’ browser, not the installed UCMeetChat Desktop app. The matrix.to link method mentioned above is more universal, especially for a large group of people using UCMeetChat Desktop, and is recommended by the Matrix admin team.
